What is Democracy?

I recently read a little ditty which asked if Google and Digg where what they claimed to be, that is, Internet Democracies. The article, located at:

Are Google and Digg democracies? by ZDNet's Donna Bogatin

The argument which attempts to counter Digg and Google's claims goes down the path of stating that perhaps they are not democracies because they can be so easily controlled by a rich few who are prepared to invest in influencing these communities. Isn't that Democracy? Isn't that how democratic society works the world over? People spend a tonne of money on campaigns convincing the voting public that they will come through on their promises, and then they get into office and forget all about their campaign?

If Google and Digg are being influenced most by the people who throw large amounts of money at it I think that is perhaps the best hallmark of Democracy at work.
